Something that I have been looking forward to experiencing ever since I moved to Bristol is the world famous Bristol Balloon Fiesta.
One of the most iconic images of Bristol is the balloons flying over the Clifton Suspension Bridge so I really couldn’t wait to see the balloons for myself and feel like a real Bristolian!
The fiesta is a huge festival where around 100,000 people flock to the grounds of a large manor house to see hot air balloons launched over the city, as well as enjoying all of the other sights of a summer festival event.
As you can tell, I was very excited to attend the fiesta but was almost very disappointed as the balloons had not taken off on the previous two days or on the morning of the day we attended because the winds were too high.
So as we headed to the fiesta, I felt hopeful but not to optimistic that we would see the balloons flying.
Once we struggled through the massive crowds to get into the fiesta we grabbed some food, then found ourselves a good spot to sit down to see if anything was going to happen.
Happily, we were very lucky and the balloons did actually fly!
It was the most amazing experience seeing the balloons taking off. Every time one lifted into the sky the crowds cheered and waved wildly at the balloonists.
There were so many balloons of different sizes, with different patterns and in different colours, it was even more beautiful than I imagined.
I think over 70 balloons took off during this ascent and every time I thought I was seeing the last balloons, more would start inflating and I would find a new favourite.
After the mass ascent, the other main event of the evening was due. This is called the Night-Glow and it was absolutely breathtaking!
It is, as you may be able to tell from the title, an event where balloons are tethered all around the arena and lit up by the gas burner inside. This was choreographed to music and was very emotional and romantic.
The whole day ended in a finale of fireworks directly after the Night-Glow which finished everything off perfectly.
I can’t wait to do it all again next year 🙂
